The grapes are sourced from vineyards located in Anderson Valley, Sonoma County, Napa Valley, and Mendocino County. The formula behind this blend is rough and unscientific. The organic Carignan is sourced from a vineyard in Redwood Valley and acts as a bridge between the Rhone and Bordeaux varietals. Consisting of about a third each of Bordeaux, Rhone, and other Zinfandel dominated varietals, the juice is aged for 14 months in French oak using 100% new oak is on all of the varietals except Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Sirah which only used about 40% new oak. Needless to say this blend is complex and bold. Aromas of pepper, cigar, black currant, and violets lead into a deep palate of baked red berries, bruised ripe plum, and smoke. Finishing rich and long with pepper, roasted herbs, and earthy mushrooms rounded out by nuances of mocha. Enjoy on its own, age it for a few years, or pair with rich, intense dishes.
