Sangiovese
Tuscany, Italy
In terms of production quantity, the 2017 vintage is limited but one of high quality for La Ghirlanda. The last week in April 2017 brought a snap freeze. The extreme cold affected the entire Italian peninsula. Bindi Sergardi’s Mocenni Estate in Siena, Tuscany, is high in altitude of 1500 feet and was almost entirely unaffected. A winter with unusually little precipitation caused all vines to produce fewer
grapes. In the late spring and during the summer, there was no rain, with temperatures reaching 35°C. Some rain arrived at the beginning of September, at last bringing relief to the drought-stricken
land. Harvest of the sangiovese grapes of La Ghirlanda 2017 started at the very beginning of October.
VITICULTURE/VINIFICATION
Fermentation takes place in stainless steel vats where maceration lasts 16/18 days at a controlled temperature of 28/30°C(82/86°F). Shortly after malolactic fermentation the wine is transferred into
oak barrels. The bottled wine then remains stored in the cellar for refinement prior to its release.
TASTING NOTES
Intense ruby red in color. An ample and complex bouquet, with distinct notes of flowers, fresh fruit and spices. The palate is vigorous and vibrant, a lovely acidic vein fused with a lot of flavor making it
an ample and balanced wine. Elegant and soft tannins. The finish and aftertaste are persistent and lingering. A true and authentic expression of sangiovese.
