The town of Chieti is situated on a hilltop overlooking the Pescara River, about ten miles inland from the Adriatic coast; near here we find our producer, Gianni Pasquale, who is Technical Director for the local co-operative winery. The coop began in the late fifties with a few small selected vineyards and wine growers, and in the last forty years has grown to some 500 members; together they tend nearly 2,000 acres planted to several different grape varieties and benefit from their association with one of the most efficiently run and quality-oriented coops in the region. Their Cococciola, an indigenous grape, is very fresh with lively acidity yet softly textured, zesty and limey, and charmingly versatile.
